Suggestion of Standardized Representation of Ondol in Chinese Characters -A Review of Notations in Historical Literature

<Abstract>
Reviewing its inconsistent use of Chinese characters-referred to here as Asian ideograms to reflect regional neutrality and cultural inclusiveness-this study examined how Ondol, the traditional Korean underfloor heating system, had been represented, focusing on the variants “溫堗” and “溫突.” As Hallyu culture expanded globally and Ondol was introduced in international encyclopedias, the need for standardized logographic representation became increasingly evident. The study analyzed historical documents, including the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and the Diary of the Royal Secretariat, and found that “溫堗” appeared more frequently. It also observed that the character “堗,” a Korean-coined ideogram (gukja, 國字), had been independently used to denote chimneys and structures associated with Ondol. This character more accurately captured the unique conceptual and cultural attributes of Ondol. Based on its historical prevalence and semantic precision, the study proposed “溫堗” as the standardized ideogramic representation.
