<Abstract>
The gudeul was a traditional Korean floor heating system that evolved into the modern ondol. Among its components, the gulttuk gaejari (chimney base) played a central role, most importantly by preventing backdraft and ensuring safety. It also stored heat and improved combustion efficiency, making it a distinctive and scientifically meaningful feature of the gudeul. This study identified the gaejari as a unique structural element that differentiated the gudeul from other global heating systems. While construction knowledge had long relied on oral tradition and practical experience, this paper provided a foundational analysis of the gaejari’s functions, offering a basis for evidence-based research to improve efficiency, safety, and the sustainable application of gudeul technology.
